Ferries, background, dock in the port of Calais, northern France, in November 2021. At least 76 people have died crossing the English Channel in 2024, making it the deadliest year on record for small boat crossings.

This latest incident comes as 2024 is named the deadliest year on record for small boat crossings along the perilous migration route.
