Adriana Smith is a patient at Emory University Hospital Midtown in Atlanta. Emergency complications early in her pregnancy led to brain death, but she remains on life support as the pregnancy continues, according to her family. Her case has become a symbol of the medical and ethical issues stemming from a Georgia law that bans most abortions and confers fetal "personhood" rights.<br>

The anti-abortion movement is rallying around new laws that establish fetal ‘personhood.’ Doctors are scrambling to adjust, but even conservatives don’t always agree on how they should be applied.
